Hello! I’m Daria Skvartsova, the new host of our segment, Weekend Interview. I majored in international journalism, and today, I’m excited to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Faculty of Journalism at BSU. Joining me is Tatiana Vladimirovna Solodovnikova, PhD in Philology and Head of the International Journalism Department, to discuss the events and activities marking this milestone. If you’ve attended or worked at the School at any point in its history, we’d love to hear from you. Please share your stories or photos by contacting me at skvartsovad@bk.ru.
“…doing things that bring joy…”
Daria: Good morning, Tatiana Vladimirovna! You have so many projects during the week. Do you try to keep work out of your weekends?
Tatiana Vladimirovna: Yes, I certainly try to keep work out of my weekends, but unfortunately, it doesn’t always go as planned, for both my family and me. Even now, I’m preparing this material at 5 a.m. on a Saturday. By 7, I have my gym session—time for myself. In recent years, I’ve made more of an effort to relax with family and friends on weekends, doing things that bring joy.
Daria: If I may ask, are weekends sacred in your life?
Tatiana Vladimirovna: Sacred? I am a religious person, so the word itself has deep meaning for me. I think you’re using it in the sense of «deeply valued, cherished, and inviolable.» Are weekends inviolable for me? No, certainly not. There are tasks that simply must be done, and sometimes there isn’t enough time during the week. In those cases, the weekend can be a lifesaver!
Daria: Do you have any family rituals, like sharing breakfast together? Do you ever make muffins for breakfast, or do you go for fresh salads – quick and healthy?
Tatiana Vladimirovna: Yes, we have plenty of family rituals. When I’m in Minsk with my daughter, I indulge in staying in bed a bit longer on weekends, cuddling, enjoying a couple of cups of coffee in bed, or, if I’m in the mood, making pancakes to share. Generally, I maintain a healthy lifestyle and love cooking nutritious meals, but I also believe it’s important to indulge in culinary treats from time to time.
Daria: Weekends offer a taste of domestic life, while also giving you space to think about work projects – it’s valuable free time for the mind.
Tatiana Vladimirovna: The mind of a teacher, scholar, and analyst, which I am, is always occupied with generating new ideas and reflecting on projects. Weekends do provide a lot of time for this. However, I do my best to switch off whenever possible – it’s necessary to gain a fresh perspective on my daily work.
Challenges and Traditions in Journalism
Daria: Young journalists are often seen as creative and ambitious, willing to work tirelessly. What are the challenges in your profession?
Tatiana Vladimirovna: The greatest challenge – and also the most fascinating aspect – is working with people, finding the right approach for each individual, and knowing what to say at the right moment. Maintaining a professional attitude, enjoying the work, and feeling satisfied is crucial for me. This requires both time and the mental energy for self-improvement and professional development.
Daria: What are the guiding principles in educating young journalists?
Tatiana Vladimirovna: The key principle is to be a patriot and set an example for students. Another essential guideline is honesty, especially with oneself, because dishonesty is easily detected, particularly by students. Love what you do, and teach students to appreciate it. Being passionate about your work leads to happiness. It’s also important to admit mistakes or gaps in your knowledge – this is the drive to keep learning and growing. Emotional stability is essential, regardless of what’s happening in your personal life.
Daria: The life of a faculty member is a unique experience. What events and activities has your department organized to celebrate the Faculty’s anniversary?
Tatiana Vladimirovna: This semester, both teachers and students are exploring the Jubilee Booklet during seminars and lectures. I’m delighted to see young people interested in our Faculty’s past, present, and future. We are hosting a contest, «Heroes of Our Time,» where students and colleagues can assign humorous titles like «Master of the Artistic Word,» «King of Discourse,» «Layout Fairy,» and «Grammar Queen.» We’ve also organized several excursions to places like the BELTA news agency, International Radio Belarus, the interstate TV and radio company MIR. We plan visits to Sport Panorama newspaper, the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies, and the Museum of Belarusian Cinema History.
Daria: The teaching staff at the International Journalism Department have been working together since 2019. Are there any traditions, both among staff and in academic matters?
Tatiana Vladimirovna: We have a wonderful, supportive team, which makes the department a pleasant and productive place to work – something that’s very important to me as a department head. We enjoy outings to the Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater, and recently, we attended Esmeralda. I always try to wish my colleagues a happy birthday, which has become easier with social media and messaging apps. Academically, we regularly hold English sections at our annual student conference, participate in national professional events with colleagues from other departments, and are pleased to welcome partner colleagues from abroad. We aim to maintain warm and friendly relationships with our peers.
A Life Motto
Daria: Thank you, Tatiana Vladimirovna. To wrap up, could you share your life motto?
Tatiana Vladimirovna: «There will be no other life; live here and now.» Let me explain this without falling into clichés. Life is a complex journey, and not everyone is given the opportunity to experience it fully. We are here to find happiness – that’s our main purpose. Therefore, every moment of our lives, every sunrise and sunset, should be filled with joy and love. We must remember that time is our most valuable resource, and we should manage it wisely because we won’t get a second chance to walk this path.
Daria: Tatiana Vladimirovna, thank you so much for joining us. On this milestone birthday of our Faculty, I wish you, your colleagues, and your students success, creativity, and professionalism in your future projects.
