WEEKEND INTERVIEW: STEPPING BEYOND BORDERS — STUDENTS EXCHANGE IN KALININGRAD

English section

International Women’s Day transcends mere celebration of spring, beauty, and inspiration; it also serves as an occasion to honor resilience, the pursuit of knowledge, and the exploration of new opportunities. Nowadays, women and girls are increasingly venturing beyond conventional limits, opting for international exchange programs that allow them to immerse themselves in diverse cultural and academic environments. In this context, I, Daria Gorskina, alongside my co-interviewer Ivan Cherednik, have the distinct pleasure of speaking with Vasilina Kozlova. Her narrative exemplifies the profound impact of participating in an exchange program in Kaliningrad, which has significantly contributed to both her professional and personal development.

FLOWER WEEKEND: A CELEBRATION HONORING WOMEN AND GIRLS

Daria Gorskina: Greetings to everyone! As we approach the holiday dedicated to spring and appreciation for women, it presents a perfect opportunity to express heartfelt gratitude to those who inspire us daily.

Ivan Cherednik: Hello there! Hello, Dasha! Hello, Vasilina ! I agree, women epitomize strength, wisdom, and support, propelling families, projects, and entire professional domains forward.

Daria Gorskina: Our female students at the Faculty of Journalism are making remarkable strides in various fields such as science and journalism, setting new benchmarks and confidently presenting their innovative ideas. For instance, at our Faculty of Journalism, BSU, we are fortunate to have a great number of esteemed female lecturers who motivate and support aspiring students.

Ivan Cherednik: Indeed, one notable figure is Irina Viktorovna Tolstonogova, a senior lecturer in the International Journalism Department and Deputy Dean. She not only embodies kindness and charisma but also played a pivotal role in inviting Vasilina to participate in a semester-long study at the university in Kaliningrad through the exchange program.

KALININGRAD – AN INTELLECTUAL ADVENTURE

Daria Gorskina: Vasilina, we are eager to learn about your experience participating in the exchange program. To start, what motivated you to take this significant step? Why did you choose to study abroad?

Vasilina Kozlova: I believed it would be an enriching and essential experience in my life.

Ivan Cherednik: Going to a different country is invariably challenging. What were your initial impressions of Kaliningrad? Did the reality meet your expectations?

Vasilina Kozlova: My first impressions were somewhat underwhelming, as I faced numerous challenges and initially regretted my decision. However, that phase was fleeting, and I ultimately developed a deep affection for the city.

Daria Gorskina: Regarding your living conditions, how does hostel life in Kaliningrad compare to what you were accustomed to in Minsk?

Vasilina Kozlova: There were minimal differences; both hostels were of comparable quality and recently renovated. The accommodations in Kaliningrad were more spacious and designed to house a larger number of students.

Ivan Cherednik: Student life is not merely about academics but also about forging new connections. Were you able to establish friendships with local students?

Vasilina Kozlova: Yes, I was fortunate to meet and befriend several wonderful individuals with whom I continue to maintain communication. They expressed keen interest in our culture, the nuances of life in Belarus, and the university experience itself.

Daria Gorskina: What aspects of the university and the educational process surprised you the most? What were the primary professional benefits derived from this internship?

Vasilina Kozlova: I was taken aback by the dedication with which students approached their studies. Admission to this university is competitive, and as a result, all students are quite committed to their education. I found that I was able to enhance the skills I had acquired during my first year.

Ivan Cherednik: Of course, special personal memories tend to resonate long after one’s studies conclude. Looking back, which particular moments do you find yourself reflecting on most frequently?

Vasilina Kozlova: I often reminisce about the times my mother flew out to visit. We would immerse ourselves in the city’s atmosphere, wandering the streets from dawn till dusk. However, the most indelible memory has to be our trip to Zelenogradsk, a charming coastal town in the Kaliningrad region.

Daria Gorskina: As we draw this conversation to a close, what words of wisdom would you offer to those who are currently contemplating embarking on a student exchange program?

Vasilina Kozlova: My primary advice would be to cast aside any hesitations. Embrace every moment of your international experience and strive to make the most of every opportunity that comes your way.

CREDO OF LIFE: THE REFLECTIONS OF A YOUNG WOMAN

Daria Gorskina: It is imperative to highlight that our guest is not only intelligent and talented but also exudes beauty and grace. Observing her, one cannot help but wonder about the guiding principles that empower her to advance with such confidence.

Ivan Cherednik: I concur. Thus, I would like to pose a direct question to you, Vasilina: what is the most paramount life credo you follow? What guiding principle informs your choices?

Vasilina Kozlova: «EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON US». I staunchly believe that individuals possess the capacity to shape their lives according to their aspirations. This philosophy serves as a powerful motivator to attain one’s goals and address challenges.

Daria Gorskina: Thank you, Vasilina. Your experience in the exchange program has emerged as more than just a relocation; it was, in essence, a transformative journey towards independence, accountability, and self-assurance.

Ivan Cherednik: My sincere admiration for you, Vasilina. On this International Women’s Day, it becomes especially pertinent to engage with individuals like you who are paving the way for others through their remarkable stories. Wishing you a joyful holiday!

Daria Gorskina: Ultimately, the contemporary woman stands not solely as a symbol of spring but also as a representation of strength, knowledge, and limitless opportunities.

  13. In this interview, I liked its sincerity and vitality the most — it is especially valuable that Vaselina does not hide her first doubts and difficulties, which makes her story truly inspiring. I was also impressed by how the authors organically linked the student’s personal experience with the theme of the women’s holiday, showing a modern woman through the prism of strength and the desire for knowledge. The only thing that I am a little lacking is more detailed professional information about the studies themselves and the specific skills that Vasilina acquired at the journalism faculty in Kaliningrad. Thank you for this issue!

  14. This article is both inspiring and relatable. It captures the universal truth that worthwhile experiences often begin with discomfort and doubt, yet lead to profound personal growth. 16. Great interview! Such an inspiring story, especially on the eve of International Women’s Day. It was a great honor for me to participate in its creation.
What I liked most was Vasilina’s honesty — not everyone is willing to admit that their first impressions were negative and that they even wanted to give up at the beginning. This moment makes the story feel real and genuine, showing that behind every success there are often doubts and challenges that simply need to be overcome.
I was also touched by the part about her mother and the trip to Zelenogradsk. It’s wonderful when family support accompanies us even in new countries and cities.
A special shout-out for her life credo: «Everything depends on us.» Short, but so powerful!
Thanks to the authors for this warm material and to Vasilina for sharing her story so openly. Wishing you success in your studies and many more exciting trips ahead! 🌷

  17. I really liked the article for its sincerity. It is especially valuable that Vasilina honestly told about the first doubts and difficulties — this makes the story alive and truly motivating. A touching detail about mom’s arrival and walks in Zelenograd adds warmth to the text. The only thing I personally missed a bit in this interview was the professional details about my studies. Vasilina is studying journalism, and it would be very interesting to find out exactly how the Kaliningrad school of journalism differs from the Minsk school: what unusual pairs there were, what skills she improved there, and what surprised her in the teachers’ approach. But in general, these wishes are more like a request to continue, because the story really caught on.

  18. In my opinion, the article is too general. It focuses a lot on feelings and spring flowers but gives few real facts about the studying process. I would have expected to see more information regarding what exactly she learned professionally, but the article doesn’t say.

  19. What a great article for the holiday! Vasilina’s example is very inspiring.
‎The topic of international exchanges is well covered. ‎But I was a little short on specifics about her studies. ‎I’d like to know what subjects she studied.

  20. I really liked this article because it shows real people and their stories, not just dry facts. It is especially pleasant that the conversation is structured like a friendly conversation between students — warmth and sincerity are immediately felt.
I was most impressed by Vasilina’s honesty. She wasn’t afraid to tell me that it was difficult for her at first and she even regretted her decision to leave. This is very vital and commands respect — not everyone is ready to talk about their doubts. But then you can see how she has grown, how this experience has made her stronger and more independent.
I also like that the article emphasizes that a modern woman can be different — gentle, strong, smart, and beautiful at the same time. And Vasilina’s phrase «Everything depends on us» became a little inspiration for me. Thank you for such bright and motivating material!

  21. This material is important as a practical evidence of the benefits of international student exchanges. It destroys the fear of the unknown and shows that even if the start is difficult, the result can exceed expectations. Vasilina’s advice to «cast aside doubts» and «seize the moment» is a strong motivational message for young people facing a choice: to take risks or stay in a familiar environment. Thank you very much for such a wonderful article!
